Your hair might look healthy. But what is happening underneath?

We spend a lot of time looking at our hair.

Is it shiny?
Does it feel dry?
Has the colour faded?
Does it have enough volume?
Is it frizzy?

But there is one part of your hair that is surprisingly easy to overlook: your scalp.

And while your stylist can see a lot simply by looking at your hair, some of the things affecting your hair aren't necessarily visible to the naked eye.

That is where Kérastase K-SCAN comes in.

At Vital Salon in Taunton, we use K-SCAN as part of our approach to personalised haircare, combining professional expertise with advanced imaging and artificial intelligence to understand your hair and scalp in much greater detail.

So, what actually is K-SCAN?

K-SCAN is an advanced AI-powered hair and scalp analysis system from Kérastase.

Rather than simply asking whether your hair feels dry or oily, K-SCAN uses a specialist camera with 4K resolution and three different types of light to capture information that isn't always obvious during a normal consultation.

The technology uses:

  • White light to help assess oiliness, hair fibre characteristics and density
  • Cross-polarised light to highlight features such as redness and irritation
  • UV light to reveal things such as dandruff and porphyrin

The images are then analysed using AI developed through L'Oréal Advanced Research. Kérastase states that the system has been trained using more than 12,000 images covering different hair and scalp types.

In other words, it isn't simply taking a photograph of your scalp.

It is interpreting what that photograph can tell us.

Why does your scalp matter so much?

Think of your scalp as the environment your hair grows from.

If you are investing in colour, extensions, styling or premium haircare, it makes sense to understand the condition of that environment too.

Two people can have very different hair that looks similar from across the salon.

One might have an oily scalp but dry lengths.

Another might have fine hair with lower density.

Someone else might experience visible dandruff or signs of scalp imbalance.

And someone with beautifully glossy hair might still have a scalp that needs a completely different approach.

This is why we believe a great hair consultation shouldn't stop at "What would you like your hair to look like?"

It should also ask:

"What does your hair and scalp actually need?"

What can K-SCAN see that I can't?

This is probably the most interesting part.

During a K-SCAN consultation, we can look much more closely at areas such as dandruff, porphyrin, hair fibre diameter and hair density.

Your stylist can show you the images as part of the consultation, giving you a completely different way of understanding your hair.

Instead of us simply telling you:

"I think your scalp is a little oily."

You can actually see what we're talking about.

That changes the conversation.

It turns haircare from guesswork into something much more visual and personalised.

Is K-SCAN just an AI diagnosis?

No — and this is an important distinction.

The technology doesn't replace your stylist.

It gives your stylist more information.

Your K-SCAN results are considered alongside your consultation, your hair history, your lifestyle, your existing routine and what you want to achieve.

The technology provides the data.

Your hairdresser provides the expertise.

That combination is what makes the experience particularly useful.

What happens during a K-SCAN at Vital?

The experience is simple.

1. We talk about your hair

Before we scan anything, we want to understand you.

What are you noticing about your hair?
What would you like to improve?
What products are you currently using?
Do you colour your hair?
How do you style it?

Your answers help put the technology into context.

2. We scan your scalp

Your stylist uses the K-SCAN camera to capture detailed images of your scalp and hair.

You can see the live images during the process, making the consultation much more interactive.

For a more detailed diagnosis, K-SCAN can analyse multiple areas of the scalp rather than relying on a single capture.

3. We analyse the results

The technology analyses the images and creates a profile based on the characteristics it identifies.

This can help us understand areas such as scalp condition, hair density and fibre diameter.

4. We create your personalised haircare plan

This is where the technology becomes useful.

Your results can help us recommend the most appropriate Kérastase products and professional treatments for your individual needs.

Rather than choosing a product because the bottle says "hydrating" or because somebody on social media recommended it, we're starting with your hair.

5. We can compare the results

Following an appropriate in-salon treatment, K-SCAN can provide before-and-after imagery so you can see the changes for yourself.

And that is one of our favourite parts.

Because sometimes the best proof isn't another promise.

It's being able to see the difference.

Does everyone need a K-SCAN?

Not necessarily.

And that's another reason we like it.

We don't believe everyone needs the same treatment, the same products or the same routine.

Your hair might need more moisture.

Your scalp might need a different approach.

Your hair might benefit from strengthening.

Or you might simply discover that the products you've been using are actually very well suited to you.

A good diagnosis isn't about finding something wrong.

It's about understanding what is right for you.

Why we offer K-SCAN at Vital

At Vital, we have always believed that great hair should be treated as individual as the person wearing it.

Your hair has its own texture, history, colour, lifestyle and needs.

That's why our approach isn't simply about choosing a service from a menu.

It's about understanding the fabric of your hair and tailoring what we do around it.

K-SCAN takes that philosophy one step further.

It gives us another layer of information to help us make more informed recommendations — combining technology, Kérastase expertise and the experience of your stylist.

Because personalised haircare shouldn't mean buying more products.

It should mean choosing the right ones.

Is a K-SCAN worth doing if my hair already feels healthy?

Absolutely.

In fact, you don't have to wait until there is a problem.

A K-SCAN can give you a baseline understanding of your scalp and hair, which can be useful as your hair changes over time.

Your hair isn't static.

Colouring, heat styling, seasons, hormones, lifestyle and even changes to your routine can all influence how your hair behaves.

Repeating the diagnosis can therefore help you track how your hair and scalp are changing and whether your routine is still appropriate. Kérastase specifically recommends repeat K-SCAN diagnoses as a way of monitoring progress over time.

The future of haircare is personal

For years, haircare has often been about choosing products based on hair type:

Dry hair. Fine hair. Coloured hair. Curly hair.

But your hair is more complicated than a label on a bottle.

K-SCAN gives us the opportunity to look closer.

To understand your scalp.

To examine your hair.

To combine technology with professional experience.

And ultimately, to make your haircare routine feel less like trial and error and more like something designed specifically for you.

Curious about what your hair and scalp are really telling you?

K-SCAN is available at Vital Salon in Taunton as part of our personalised Kérastase haircare experience.
